Dostoevsky in the Desert & Creating a Book on Blurb

We will meet at the home of Lisa Woodson ('00) where she will present "Dostoevsky in the Desert." A Russian Area Studies major at Wellesley, Lisa moved to New Mexico two years ago to teach Russian at UNM. She will talk about the life-changing event that she is currently in the middle of, a career change necessitated by changes in the job market, and what it has meant for her over the past couple years.

Lee Matthew ('68) will share the book she created on Blurb. It is a book of photos and photo composites by Lee paired with quotes by poets & authors. She will talk briefly about the process and also about how to make a book using Blurb.

  • We'll gather and dine from 11:30 to 12:45 with introductions, followed by the two fifteen to twenty minute presentations.
  • In the past, we have worked with the local folks providing more of the savory offerings and those traveling to supply desserts. The club will supply beverages.
  • Lisa suggests that parking near her home is limited so we may want to meet at the Merc in Placitas and carpool to her neighborhood. We'll share more when as we get more responses.

As Lee Matthew said in her email to me, "Wishing you all the best and hoping to reconnect with more of you in 2016."

Directions to the home of Lisa Woodson:

145 Windmill Trl N
Placitas, NM 87043

From Albuquerque: Take 25 north to the Placitas/Bernalillo exit (550/165), and go right (east) on 165. Take 165 for almost 7 miles, then turn left on Camino de las Huertas (the Presbyterian Church and post office are on the right-hand side of 165 just before Camino de Las Huertas). Follow Camino de las Hueras (very curvy, up-and-down road!) for about 3 miles to Windmill Trl North, which is a gravel road (note: Windmill Trl South is a left turn just before Windmill Trl N). Go about .25 miles on Windmill Trl South to our house, number 145. Our house is the second house on the left after the intersection with Indian Flats Road.

From Rio Rancho: Take 528 north and turn right (east) on 550. Follow 550 straight past 25, where it turns into 165.

From Santa Fe: Take 25 south towards Albuquerque, and get off at the Placitas/Bernalillo exit (550/165). Turn left (east) onto 165.

The Woodson house is the second house on the left after the intersection with Indian Flats Road.

IMPORTANT NOTE ON PARKING! We live on a narrow gravel road, and there is no room for street parking right at our house. We can accommodate a few cars in our driveway area. Otherwise, another parking area is just before the intersection of Indian Flats Road. If possible, I would recommend carpooling to our house. You could also arrange to park in the parking lot of the local grocery store ("the Merc"), which on 165 about 2 miles from 25, about 15 minutes from our house. I would also be happy to pick people up at the Merc and bring them to our house.
